RECENT RESTORED BOAT PROJECTS

Ben undertakes a number of restoration projects each year, varying from a full restoration to a simple re-varnish and repainting.  Each project is tailored to the specific needs of the boat, the owners preference, and the budget available.

Each project is carried out, on site in Ben’s customised workshops in St Helens, Isle of Wight.

Please see below for some examples of recent projects:-

NORMAN NEWELL, 9FT SAILING DINGHY

The dinghy came to Ben in a sorry state after being neglected for a number of years.  The boat was stripped back to bare wood, inside and out, and retailed as needed.  The exterior received an epoxy resin coating, and the boat was finished with eight coats of varnish.

1890’s RIVER BOAT

The river boat was a well-loved family boat that needed a bit of TLC given her age.  During her two months in Ben’s workshop, he removed a coating of black bitumen tar varnish to again reveal her original Honduras mahogany planking.  The outside received an epoxy resin coating to ensure water tightness, and the beautiful planking was smoothed and varnished – Ben’s usual eight coats.

16FT SAILING BOAT

This boat was leaking heavily from the centreboard casing.  Ben removed the old centreboard box to discover heavy rot, both in the bottom of the centreboard box and the keel.  Ben dried out the keel, replacing sections of rotten timber where necessary.  Ben then hand made a new centreboard box, custom fitted to the boat.

AFFA FOX, INTERNATIONAL 14 SAILING DINGHY

The International came to Ben’s workshops after being out of the water for a number of years, and having numerous leaks.  The exterior of the boat was sanded back to bare wood, received the epoxy resin coating and eight coats of varnish.
